The 2007 Washington State Closed Badminton Tournament just concluded
this weekend is the 60th edition which also coincides with Chinese New Year.
We did not find out Chinese New Year would be the same weekend as the tournament
which prevented some players from participating, but what better
way to celebrate the New Year than playing badminton.
To celebrate, we had Chinese dumplings (Mei-Chin's idea) and cakes on
Saturday of the tournament.
This tournament's story is probably about the juniors, not only there
are quite a few juniors playing this year and also may have the youngest
players (Jenny - 10 years old, Kevin 10/11 years old) ever participated
in the WA Closed. Katherine was gracious enough to play with Jenny
and the adult/junior pair were the runner-ups in Women's doubles "C".
Coach Paz also teamed up with young Clara and younger Kevin in the
Mixed and Men’s Doubles events. Paz and Clara created a little
upset on the quarter final over the number 1 seeded and gave the
eventual winners some tough games in the semi. Paz and Kevin
also ended up losing in the "B" flight.
The same women's singles finalists from last year played against each other
again this year. Ying-Fang was able to push Brooke to 3 games this time,
but Brooke did prevail to win two years in a row.
In the mixed doubles finals, Garrett started the grunt/yell/cheers
on the good plays, and Kenny also responded with his own.
While the males players were making all the noises, Masako
and Wendy were relatively quiet concentrating on making good plays.
Wendy and Kenny did win in 3 tough games.
Paz took the Men's Singles crown, Kenny made the 2nd game close
despite the shoulder injury.
In women's doubles, the experience won as usual, Wendy and Marti
teamed up to beat the younger Masako and Ying-Fang in 3 games.
The father son pair Geoff/Curtis had a little upset on the semi,
but lost to the stronger pair of Renly and Greg to conclude
this year's tournament.
Thanks everyone for the help to make the tournament successful
and hopefully I didn't forget anyone.
